Statement on Georgian Olympic sportspersons awards

Date: 2012 July 26

Olympic Awards for Georgia athletsIn recent days, several media outlets have spread the information about Georgian Olympic athletes to be awarded with USD 1,200,000 for gold medals at the London 2012 Olympic Games. The Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs of Georgia declares that this information does not reflect the reality.

The Ministry considers that it is not ethical to spread unchecked and unfair information especially in the time of very tense competitions ahead for every Georgian athlete during the Olympic Games.

The Ministry confirms that there are financial awards assigned by the Government for Georgian  sportspersons who will participate in the final stages of the Games.  But the exact amount of awards depends on each sportsperson's and team's achievements during the Games.

Accordingly, the exact amount of awards for the sportspersons will be known after the London 2012 Olympic Games are finished.
